Using QR Codes? Think Twice Before Turning to This Technology

I adore new technology, especially the kind that works on the fly. QR codes are just that; scannable codes embedded with information about, well, about whatever you’d want potential customers to know. On a few forums I frequent, QR codes have been compared to the second coming of Jesus, according to some self-professed “gurus.” While I certainly agree that QR codes have the potential for becoming viral, it seems more like they are lost in the proverbial shuffle. More than once, my opinion has been challenged with indignant criticism about my not seeing the value of QR technology. In contrast actually, I think they fall short not in their technology but in how effectively they have been marketed.

Consumers, particularly those who aren’t necessarily tech-savvy, will be unlikely to utilize a new technology unless they have been walked through it’s use. Merely telling people to “SCAN THIS CODE WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE” isn’t going to win over these people, who constitute a large component of your potential sales base. Go on, ignore them, let them figure out QR codes, it’s not hard. Uh huh, ok, keep that in mind when you’re trying to figure out why people aren’t using them more. They are, after all, free. It’s not as if you have to sell someone on a scan code.

This might help to paint a visual picture of the problem i’m suggesting with QR marketing…

A recent store ad from Bed Bath and Beyond contained two QR codes on a single page. Don’t judge, this place rocks and my house reflects my allegiance to BB&B. Anyway, this was the only page in an 18 page ad that contained QR code technology. If you have your glasses on and were actually aware of what a QR code resembles, you might in fact, find it. That’s about the only way I saw it, thanks to my familiarity with QR codes visually. Sadly, i’d speculate that few people have that awareness. In fact, who would really care? It’s not as if the ad mades this technology:

1. Easy to find

2. Attractive

3. Useful

In fact, BB&B, one of the largest retailers in the country simply placed a small note above the QR code:

“Download a QR code reader app for your smart phone and then snap this!”

…makes me want to snap the PR person’s neck to see this. Are you kidding? Have you spoken to anyone with a smart phone recently to understand their hesitation with identity theft?? They didn’t even bother to explain WHY anyone would want to go to their PC, get an app and scan the code? What’s in it for me? Darned if I know. Truthfully, i’m shocked this even made it through editing. It’s not only poor PR, it’s terrible product placement. Why is this QR slapped in the middle of this particular page, seemingly randomly?

I hope this helps to give you a visual sense of what I see as a fundamental flaw in QR. It’s not QR, it’s the people behind it who don’t understand their client base. If the lack of education of consumers on QR codes continues, I see it dying a slow, miserable death in the next 6 months.
